Hike the Highlands Festival visited the community of Meat Cove, a hiking destination area in northern Cape Breton on its 3rd day of the festival, Sept. 15, 2019. 70 plus hikers enjoyed the Cape St. Lawrence, Little Grassy and Meat Cove Look-off trails. A big thank-you to Derek MacLellan and his volunteers at Meat Cove Welcome Centre for their hospitality, lunch and friendship to Hike the Highlands Festival. Greatly appreciated it.

The day ended with the Grandmother Moon presentation at Freshwater Lake, Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It is said that Grandmother Moon watches over the waters of the earth. This Indigenous ceremony celebrates Grandmother Moon and women’s teachings. A big thank-you to Mi’kmaq Elder: Mary Louise Bernard for inviting us to her ceremony.
