Spring Hiking – Be Prepared

Be prepared when hiking in the spring for wet and tough conditions. Expect the unexpected. Some conditions you should expect are – milder temps – snow melting, higher brooks and streams, icy conditions,  windfalls, muddy conditions, slippery steps & bridges, slippery rocks and roots, snow and much more.

If possible hike with a friend or family member. If you are hiking solo, let someone know where you are and what time you should be back. Take your cell phone with you.

Here are some pointers – 1) wear waterproof hiking boots, 2) wear gaiters, 3) use hiking poles for balance, crossing streams and brooks and ascending & descending trails, 4) dress in layers, 5) bring a toque – you will probably need it, 6) bring gloves – your hands will be cold , 7) wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from branches, windfalls etc., 8) bring a day pack for extra layers, water bottles, snacks etc. 9) bring a camera for photos. Trails look so different in the spring when there are no leaves on the trees.  10) spring hiking generally requires more energy – bring extra snacks, extra water etc.

Have fun, enjoy nature and leave no trace.
