Tips for Summer Hiking
Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada are experiencing a heat wave this month, July 2022, and its important to prepare for summer hiking.
Here are 10 important tips for summer hiking:
1) Hike early in the day (8:00 am or earlier) to avoid the heat. The hottest part of the day is from 10:00 am. – 2:00 pm.
2) Get to the trail early to get a parking spot especially if it a popular trail.
3) Bring 2 bottles of water for each hike. Drink lots of water.
4) Bring lots of snacks. Hiking in hot weather burns lots of calories.
5) Take rest breaks in the shade.
6) Wear a hat & sunglasses and put on sunscreen on your hike.
7) Leave no Trace – What you take in, you bring out.
8) Hikers going up on a hill have right away. Hikers going down must step off the trail and allow hikers to pass.
9) COVID-19 – variant B.A. 5 is here in Nova Scotia. Please social distance – allow 6 feet between each hiker. Bring hand sanitizer and a mask in case you need it.
10) Cool down by taking a swim after your hike.
