Preparing for the Season – Part 2 -Clothing
An important part of preparing for the upcoming season is checking your clothing inventory and see if you need to replace and add anything for hiking this year. Look at your budget and determine what is required. A number of outdoor stores/companies have items on sale during the winter/spring season. You can get some great deals like 30-50% off.
1) Base layers are critical for hiking – hot weather, cold weather and rain. You can purchase base layers in short sleeves or long sleeves. They are generally merino wool or polyester & include some spandex. You will see many products include moisture wicking capabilities, quick drying and stretchy. Try to stay away from using Cotton t-shirts as they absorb sweat and keep it close to the body making you cold.
2) Next is mid-layers – generally fleeces or light jackets. Important to have a mid-layer while hiking as it is cold and windy at most mountain peaks or when you are stopping long for a break ie. lunch
3) Rain gear – check for any holes or wear in materials. Rain jackets should be water-proof and breathable. Good tip I learned is to clean your jacket and pants after use with water and a cloth to wipe any sweat or condensation off.
4) Hiking pants/shorts -are generally made of 90% plus nylon and a little of spandix. Pants/shorts (convertible pants) are usually abrasion-resistant, quick-drying fabric with easy stretch.
5) Socks – Try out socks and find out works best for you when hiking. My sock is smart wool trekking. Everyone has their favorite. Pays to carry an extra pair of socks when hiking.
