Aspy Trail – Back Again
Once a very popular hiking and cross-country ski trail in the 80’s & 90’s , the Aspy Trail seemed to fallen on hard times. It was actually closed for awhile but the Northern Cape Breton Development Society (Top of the Island) encouraged the Cape Breton Highlands National Park to open the trail again. With recent upgrades & cutting in the past few years, the Red Chair view is back ( see above) and the hiking trail should regain its popular status again. Next to this trail is the Beulach Ban Falls, a 65 ft -waterfall ( see below) and you have two great reasons to go to Big Interval in Cape Breton Highlands National Park and enjoy this trail. This hiking trail & falls will be featured as one of the 25 hikes in this year’s Hike the Highlands Festival, Sept. 9-18, 2016.
Surprisingly, the Aspy trail has no trail sign on the Cabot Trail nor trailhead sign at the beginning of the trail. This trail deserves the recognition & signage like the other 25 trails in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
