Hiking Tips to Start the Season
Start slow with short hikes ( 1-2 hrs) , then medium hikes (2-3 hrs) and later long hikes (4-6 hrs)until you get into shape. Plan & prepare for each hike before you go – get a map or brochure of the hiking trail or do your research on-line. Check out the terrain, trail rating, distance, trailhead as well the weather forecast for the day. Find someone to go with you on your hike. There are a number of good web sites to help you plan your hike – Victoria County Hiking Trails, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Trails Nova Scotia, and Provincial Day Parks.
Day of Hike – Let someone know where you are going and what time you will be back. Check the weather forecast one more time. Dress according and have a daypack with on your hike. What should be in each of your daypack ? Extra Clothes & socks, water, extra food and snacks, whistle, lightweight and weatherproof jacket. Because you are going on the hike with another hiker, you can split up the following items to carry in each of your daypacks to lighten the load – map & compass, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, first aid kit that includes moleskin for blisters, waterproof matches, flashlight and a charged cell phone, I realize you are going on a day hike, on a well maintained and marked trail and will not used most of these items but it is better to be safe than sorry.
After the Hike – Report in and let the person know you are back home safely. Write down notes on your hike, how long it took, good look-offs or viewing places, weather etc. Download your digital pictures and view them. Save them in a folder or album on your computer.
