Preparing for the season – Part 4 – Set Goals & Challenges
While I am preparing for the season, I usually set goals and challenges to keep me motivated before and during the hiking season. I am fortunate that I live in a hiking environment that has no shortages of challenges each year. They include two in Cape Breton Highlands National Park – Hike 10 hikes in one day, and the Highlands Challenge – Hike all 27 hikes in Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Hike the Highlands Festival has two challenges as well- 3 Peaks Challenge – hike 3 mountains in one day as well hikers distance award program – 25, 50, 75 and 100 km. And finally Hike Nova Scotia has its hiker distance award program – 150, 250, 500 & 1000 km.
Don’t forget to include other challenges for the summer and fall. Variety is important as well change. 1) Try Backpacking one weekend – Fishing Cove, or Cape Chignecto, 2) photography – explore new areas and capture landscape and nature shots including wildlife, 3) hike different trails ie – Cape Mabou, East Coast Trail in NL, West Mabou, 4) Go camping and explore new areas, 5) cycle –Celtic Shores Coastal Trail, or Confederation Trail in PEI. There is lots to do in 2015.
