Day 1 – Opening Night, Full of Surprises

It was like a reunion, hikers from past years, returning to say hi and wish us well for our 10th Anniversary of the festival. There were lots of hugs. But there was also many new faces to welcome and to show them the beauty and mystic of the Cape Breton Highlands. Hikers came from across North America to join us for our annual 10 day hiking festival.
The evening began with two short hikes at Freshwater Lake & Look-off trails located in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It was a warmup for the legs and to meet the hikers. Fifty two hikers joined us for the hikes. It was then followed by our opening ceremonies and a special show looking back at the past nine years of our festival. Many thanks to our special friend Wally Hayes for his great work with the show.
And so day 1 began with lots of smiles, hugs and laughter. We were back together again to enjoy this special place with old and new friends.
