Checklist for Hikers
With the 2012 Hike the Highlands festival just weeks away, we have developed a checklist for hikers to get ready:
1) Check out the festival website and get familiar with what the festival offers – guided hikes, maps, evening presentations & activities, hikers distance award program, photo contest, and opening & closing ceremonies. Determine the dates you can attend. Review the hiking schedule and determine what hikes you are interested in doing.
2) Register for the festival – a) register your hikes, then b) pay online for your registration
3) Book your accommodations – Note: We are finding more hikers are staying longer and booking cottages.
4) Equipment checklist : hiking boots, hiking socks, hiking short(s) , hiking t-shirts & base layers, hiking poles, hat(s), sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, daypack, water bottles, camera – battery charger, extra batteries, extra cards, gaiters, jacket, rain gear,
5) Hiking Preparation – most of you have probably hiked this summer but for those who haven’t – start with short hikes 2-4 km return, then move up to medium hikes 5-8 kms, then to longer hikes 9-14 kms. Include hikes that have hills. The highlands are noted for their hills/mountains.
Use this checklist as a guide in planning & preparing for the 9th Annual Hike the Highlands Festival, Sept. 14-23, 2012.
