Nikon recently announced in late January its new point and shoot cameras – two cameras that caught my eye were S9500 (see above photo) and P520 (see below). Both cameras have made improvements to each from its predecessors  S9300 ) and P510.  And they were popular with hikers. As with any new cameras wait for 2-4 months after they come out and check out the hands on reviews.

Here are some changes I noticed with S9500 compared to S9300  –   1) Built in Wifi – no adapter  2)  16 megs now 18 megs, you may or may not notice any change  3) Optical zoom went from 18x to 22x, 4) Battery improved 230 pics compared to 200 with S9300.  I owned a Nikon S9300 and I really like the changes they made with S9500.

Most of the reviews for P520 have not been as positive as most indicate very little or minimal changes made from Nikon P510.  They include a 1)  bigger screen in the back from 3.2 from 3.0, 2) resolution increase to 18 megs from 16 meg, 3) bigger sensor, 4) better macro capability form 1cm from 2 cm and 5) faster shutter speed from 1/4000s from 1/2000s.  Some reviews have said buy Nikon P510 rather than Nikon P520.
