Cape Smokey Hike – Big Ocean Views

September 3, 2008 By Tom Wilson Uncategorized

On the labour day weekend, I was able to hike Cape Smokey, a 11 km trail located in the Cape Smokey provincial park along the Cabot Trail, in Victoria County, Cape Breton, with my wife, Heather and friend Gerald Costello. The trail was going to be wet due to the rain the day before but we were game for a walk just to get out of the house.  There are six look-offs spots along the trail with the first 4 looking back to the North Shore and the last look-off providing a big ocean view to Middle Head, Ingonish Island, and Ingonish Harbour. It took us about 2 hours to reach the last look-off  but it was well worth the hike.  What an incredible view …. don’t forgot to take your camera. Coming back we were faster and return in a little over an hour and a half.  This hike is featured in the Hike the Highlands Festival, on Saturday, September 20 beginning at 10:00 am. Allow 4 hours to be on the safe side with this hike.

Some notes for hikers – due to the amount of rain the Highlands have been receiving in August, this trail is very wet in spots. I suggest wearing gaiters and or rain pants as well hiking socks that wick the moisture away from your feet. Take an extra pair of socks and a light jacket to keep warm during your breaks. Be prepared to get wet but the view at the end is definitely worth the hike.

Please find a few pictures of our hike. It was cloudy, overcast and a light drizzle.
