Nordic Walking Poles
In the last few years of the Hike the Highlands Festival, there have been more hikers using Nordic Walking Poles. So I decided to do my research and find out more. David Downer, author of Nordic Walking Step by Step and also an International Nordic Walking Instructor, states there are 12 benefits of Nordic Walking. Some that caught my eye were – Nordic Walking uses 90% of your body muscles ( Nordic Walking Step by Step, David Downer, 2006, Page 10) and burn up to 46% more energy (pg 10). Some of my other research includes you can burn 20% to 40% more calories using Nordic Walking Poles and the correct technique. In 2006, there was a Nordic Walking clinic in Inverness County and at the Recreation Nova Scotia annual conference. There was an article recently in Recreation New Brunswick news – Poles used by Nordic walkers help reduce impact on joints.
